Summer vacation in Provence and the Alps, France

We spent the first two weeks of July in Southern France, first in Provence, in the Drome valley, at a little Gite, then another week camping in the Alps.

We drove down to Lyon (turned into a long drive due to traffic, which was no fun) and spent a night there in a great hotel (right downtown in a pedestrian area) and then a great day wandering around Lyon.

After Lyon, we drove further South to the small town of Manas (marked below) where we (and some friends) had a gite reserved for the week.  Manas is a tiny little town, but there was lots to do in the area, including visiting a crocodile farm just outside Montelimar, visiting Nougat factories in Montelimar, visiting wineries (both sampling and brining some home!), visiting a silk museum (where Lydia brought home some real silk cocoons), enjoying great pizza from a local wood-fired oven pizzeria, visiting the town of Crest with its medieval tower, and letting the girls go on a pony ride.

The second week we spent in the Alps, camping in the town of La Grave (marked below) - the
campground had a great view of the Meije glacier, lots of great hikes (to some lakes and also to a refuge for the night).
Finally, after a great week, we drove back home, stopping off in Luxembourg for a day.
