Pompeii and Vesuvius

The classic scenes in Pompeii!  The people were buried in the ashes and then their bodies decayed, leaving behind holes in the ash where their body once lay.  By pouring in plaster into what is effectively a mold, one gets these preserved images of how the people were when Vesuvius exploded...

A picture of Vesuvius, taken from our hotel.  What you see here is the inner crater (see the map on the right) - in the past Vesuvius was much bigger, and the outer crater used to be the sides of the volcano until the entire mountain was blown away during one of its eruptions.

Another view of the dual crater - here we are, standing on the inner crater, looking
down towards where the cars are parked and then onto more mountains - these
are the outer crater and these used to be the sides of the volcano!

At a shop in Pompeii, where perhaps oil, fruit, or nuts used to be stored
in the pot (built into the counter there) for sale?

At a Pompeiian mansion - in the gardens.
