Many churches

True to its origins as the center of the Catholic church, all of Italy, and especially Rome, is littered with churches, many of them magnificent creations from long ago.  LuAnn was especially fascinated by them and wanted to visit them ALL (and, I must admit, she was quite a treasure trove of information, with plenty of stories about the churches, why they were built, what the statues represented, etc)  John and Lydia were a little less enthralled by seeing yet another church, and Tabitha....  well, let's just say that I think she'd only agree to come back to Italy if we promised to NOT visit any churches!

St Peters at night
The seat of the pope, the most famous church in Rome

In the San Pietro in Vincoli (Basilica of St Peter in Chains)

These are the chains that held Peter in prison in Jerusalem, now on display
A famous statue of the Exodus story
Moses (in the center) is pictured with horns (a typical way to show Moses in statues)

The ecstasy of St Agnes
If you've read the Da Vinci code, then you know why we simply had to take a picture of this...

The church (Santa Maria Maggiore) just down the street from where we stayed
This was built on the Esquiline hill in Rome, after snow miraculously fell in Rome in
August on that hill (in answer to a prayer, of how a devout couple were to dispose
of their riches - they took this as a sign to build a church on that hill)

One of the more modern churches in Rome, with a modern art door

The basilica in Pompeii

And to think, there were Sooooo many more churches to see!
