A romantic weekend for two in
Versailles, France

Some good friends of ours (Paula and Drew, see photos of them) had won a coupon for a free weekend at the Trianon Palace, right near the castle of Versailles.  They were unable to use to it and offered it to us, and of course we accepted it without hesitation!  John and Lydia stayed with our friends Dasja and Eric for the weekend (and their three kids, Matthijs, Jeanine, and Reinier), while we boarded the high speed train to Paris!

The Trianon was originally one of the palaces at Versailles, home to varying nobles (while Versailles itself was home to the Kings of France).  The hotel was quite luxurious, with a pool, spa, beauty treatments, mud baths, etc - plenty of ways to part the unsuspecting from their money.  On the other hand, it was quite nice to take a dip in the pool and the rooms were gorgeous.

The inside of our room - a rather nice size, clean and fresh.  Great views out onto the Versailles gardens. The view from our room, looking down to the Versailles gardens, pretty much where we took the
picture of the hotel above.

Lounging by the pool while Karen enjoys a swim - there are worse things in life!

At the castle itself, with a view of the fountains and gardens behind.  We spent the day at the castle (after a rather leisurely morning and a very relaxing buffet breakfast where we could talk, slowly drink our coffee, read the newspaper, or do anything else we wanted!)  We toured two areas - the queen's chambers, including a portion of the famous Hall of Mirrors, and the Louis Philippe quarters, together with the Versailles Opera House.  Unfortunately, it was crowded and not well lit in the castle, so none of our interior shots came out. :(
