Tumaini school, Mathare slum

The Mathare slum is in North Eastern Nairobi, in the Mathare valley (along the banks of the Nairobi river), and the Tumaini school is on the Northern portion of the upper valley.  Here the slum is relatively well off, with some number of multi-story buildings and stability, unlike the shanties in Kibera or lower down in the Mathare valley.
The Tumaini school was founded to help the children of this slum, and especially targets the very poor.  Below, on the right, you can see the area where the school is located, and on the left is the inside of the school - the classrooms line the corridor.  Like at Green Pastures, the Giraffe project supports the school via scholarships, funding for capital improvements (e.g. it helped to finance the purchase of the building), feeding programs, etc.

Mark helped set up the computer room here.  Below left shows the grand opening at which the plaque (below right) was unveiled (Dawn, in the pink shirt, gave the money which financed the improvements for the computer room).

Lydia making friends with the schoolchildren.
They were fascinated by her hair!

John supporting the local economy.
This woman makes Chapatis (fried dough pancakes) on the streetside,
and John bought enough for our entire group - probably the biggest sale she had all day!
