A Slovenian mountain hut
While in Slovenia, we decided to hike up to a mountain hut and spend
the night (like we have done before, in Italy and in France)
Here we are at the beginning of the hike, with our car in the
background (with the roof rack on)
Our destination for the evening, together with our room.
We spent the evening in the common room, the only English speakers in a
room of Slovenes and Croats. After probably an hour, two friendly
Slovene folks asked us, in perfect English, where we were from, and
then proceeded to translate our answers for the entire room, who were
apparently fascinated by us!
John, being typical John, asked them how to count to ten in Slovenian,
and they happily obliged, also teaching him some generally useful
vocabulary which he still remembers, even today. For the
rest of the trip, John would happily say "Dober dan" to people (hello),
must to their surprise and amusement!
Our first stop, after only a few hours - where we had a quick drink.
The funniest thing about here was there was a group of teenagers from
Flanders (Belgium), and they were really intrigued to see a family from
Mechelen in the guest book - and I don't think they ever realized that
we could understand them talking about it!
Another mountain hut, another hot chocolate and coffee stop.
The (literal) high point of our trip - Prsivec, 1761m.
Coming down the trail - not exactly trivial...
Believe it or not, I was actually on my cell phone discussed work for a
bit while coming down this trail!
Karen, of course, was less than pleased with my choice of times to
answer the phone.
