Karen went to the US to visit family (first Mark's sister Janet, then off to Mark's brother James', then off to her family in NC)
Fortuitously, Mark had a business trip at the same time, and so was able to join her for a few days at Janet's house.
First stop was a nearby park where we dammed up the river and caught the occasional fish (hard to see, but in the little pool in the picture on the left there is a fish swimming around - and yes, the fish lived to tell the tale - no fish were harmed in the taking of the pictures!)

Fresnel lenses, used in the lighthouses. The shape of the lense bends the light rays from the inner light source and produces a strong, focused, coherent beam, which is visible for miles. The creation of the Fresnel lense was a major technological advance for lighthouses.
