The Trench of Death (Dodengang)

Near Diksmuide (red dot below) is a reconstructed WW1 trench (learn more about it at GoEurope, TraBel, etc).  This area saw some quite fierce fighting between the invading German army and the defending Belgian army - at one point the canal was purposely breached by the Belgians to flood the area and slow the German advance.

The view today - instead of sandbags the wall are concrete, but it still
gives a very realistic feel

We got a very realistic feel for the trenches when it
started snowing!

Nearby in Ieper, we also visited a monument to the fallen WW1 soldiers
