Han-sur-Lesse
in the Ardennes
We went to Han-sur-Lesse and the Ardennes expecting to find nature,
trees, and campgrounds - and we found all that, but also caves,
history,
and a wonderful area of Belgium for a vacation.
The Ardennes are in Southern Belgium, near the border with Luxembourg,
Germany, and France (X:see
a map). This area saw quite a bit of fighting in WW II - the
Battle of the Bulge was fought primarily in this area (X:read
more about it) and there are constant reminders throughout the area.
Han-sur-Lesse itself is also known for its X:caves, which we
happily visited. At the end of the cave tour there is a small
boat
ride on the river Lesse (which is one of the rivers which has carved
out
the caves), and they shoot a small cannon (which echoes off all the
cave walls). At the time John (then a few months shy of 4)
howled
with shock when the cannon fired, but now he asks every few weeks
"Daddy, do you remember that big noise in the cave? When are we
going to go back there?", so I guess he wasn't too traumatised...
We camped at a tiny little campground in the tiny town of Han itself
(between the two branches of the river - and yes, that map covers ALL
of
the town of Han...) - this was our first time camping in Belgium and it
was a rather cozy little spot - only about 4 other families at the
campground.

Also nearby is La Roche en Ardenne, a larger town with a nearby castle,
hiking, etc.

And now a view from the castle:
