The Nigardsbreen glacier

After Lom, we drove along route 55 and down to Gaupne (just below ellipse with the Jostedalen label), where we camped for the night, then went up to the Nigardsbreen glacier.
Sognefjord and the north

The glacier was beautiful - we had a warm, sunny day, and the glacier came down out of the mountains and onto a mountain lake, with rivers pouring out of the glacier and feeding the lake.

We took a boat ride across the lake, then had to hike along the rock face to reach the glacier itself.  Again, this was billed as a family friendly, easy hike, but only in Norway would a family hike, suitable for all ages, include ladders to walk across crevasses!

From there we joined up with our group and went onto the glacier itself, all roped up, with crampons - John thought this was GREAT!

John with some ice - the large chunks of ice in the water had calved from
the glacier WHILE we were walking on it!  We had heard a sound like
a gunshot and then we could see these blocks of ice rolling towards the
lake.  The big chunks are at least as big as John, if not a little bigger.

Another arm of the same glacier (we hiked to this one - Karen and her Dad
are visible in the picture right where the date is)

The next day we hiked up a nearby mountain which offered some rather spectacular views:
