Joe Reisert is a good friend of mine, whom I first met in 7th grade when he moved to Garden City.  He is now a professor at Colby College and he was in London for a semester teaching - he and his family came over to the continent for a week and spent a weekend with us.

The kids in Antwerp

The kids were perfect for each other - Margaret really wanted to be a Mommy (she was 8), and Lydia really wanted another girl to be her Mommy, so they just spent the whole weekend together.  The two Johns, on the other hand, were like two peas in a pod - their John was about 9 or so months younger than our John - the two boys ran around all weekend together and just generally made mischief with each other.
Below is the crew in Antwerp, outside the cathedral.  This is a popular spot for "statues" - people who will dress up like the real statues for donations.  Since there were none this day, the kids decided to try their hand at it.

Later, in December, I was returning from the US on a business trip (through London), so Karen and the kids took the Eurostar to London for the weekend, I took a detour there, and we visited Joe for the weekend.  We had a great time - we visited Harrod's to see Father Christmas - which was VERY well done, and John regaled the Santa with tales of our carnivorous Lydia - and we visited the X:Natural History Museum (where we spent an ENTIRE day), the British Museum, and just generally had a wonderful time.  Many thanks to Joe for putting us up for the weekend and for showing us all around.

At Harrod's, waiting to see Father Christmas.  We waited for 90 minutes
(could be up to 6 hours on a weekend), but it was well worth the wait.
At the Natural History Museum, with the blue whale in the background.  The whale was made in the 1940s and it is most certainly the largest exhibit in the museum.
