Local life in and around Mechelen

The arrival of Sint Niklaass (December 6th) - he travels from Spain and hands out presents to the boys and girls.  This is a really big thing here - he comes by boat on the canal right near our house, and John's entire school (and many others) came out to see him.  That night, at Mark's work, there was a party with presents for all the children.

John (and Lydia) as X:Sinte Mette (site only in Dutch though), a saint celebrated locally in Mechelen.  The story is that he cut his cloak in two and gave half of it to a poor person to keep him warm, so all the kids at school wore little towels around them to remind them of Sinte Mette.  On Sinte Mette day (Nov 11, also WWI Armistice Day) the children go door to door singing the Sinte Mette song, for which they are given treats or money.  Last year, John got to keep both his and Lydia's money and made about $10 in a single day (in addition to all the treats!!)
